Don't Waste Your Youth: Start College Early
By Andrea Horn
In my case, high school was a colossal waste of time. Don’t get me wrong, I had fun and learned a lot. I had several excellent teachers who challenged me. Being the band drum major was a blast, and debate team taught me good public speaking skills and the ability to think quickly on my feet (except when I had to debate my boyfriend, which is NOT recommended). I was a geek, and I enjoyed my geeky activities! My big problem with high school was that, by the time my senior year rolled around, I had completed nearly all the credits I needed to graduate and as a result was spending literally hours a day in “classes” like Study Hall, Teacher’s Aide, and Yearbook. Bottom line, I was just piddling around until graduation day. I was wasting precious months of my life. I do not recommend this approach. If I had a re-do, I would have done concurrent enrollment with a nearby university. I could have earned college credit instead of piddling around selling yearbook ads, changing the letters on the school marquee sign, and making thousands of Xerox copies for teachers. I also would have CLEPed out of more classes than I did. What I’m saying is this: Earn as much college credit as you can, as young as you can. Here are some ways to do this. Concurrent enrollment at a local college. This is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED because you can live at home and knock out a bunch of credit hours while your slacker friends are wasting time with activities or fluff classes. AP classes that earn college credit. All the advantages above, plus you don’t have to pay tuition! CLEP tests. The downside is that they cost money, but the advantage is that you don’t have to show up for class. You just take a test, and if you pass, you get college credit. If you learn well by reading and are a reasonably fast learner, this could be a great option for you. Night and summer classes at a local college. If you truly love high school and don’t want to miss a minute of it, you can still take college classes at night or on weekends. Or, my personal favorite. . . Get your GED and skip high school altogether! Start college when you’re 15 or 16, and finish before you enter your 20’s. Yes, people actually do this! If you're smart and motivated, high school is probably a waste of time for you. Skip out, move on, and start your REAL life while all your immature friends are stuck in school. Good luck! |
